I really cant add to the praise the other people have put for this camera, i think it is brilliant, its so good ive sold my 35mm canon SLR equipment because of this camera, Ill never buy another roll of film again,Ive had the camera for about 1 and a half years now, and here are the things that have caught me out,
The main one, battery life, its rubbish, i had the battery run out on me for the first time when at a seal sanctuary, just as they were feeding them, Id never let the camera get to the red blinking battery symbol before, and was amazed when it shut down on me, you only have to take about 10 pictures with flash to get the yellow battery half empty indicator, a genuine battery from Fuji is extremely expensive, you can get non genuine ones for £17.99, and for some reason, the non genuine one is lasting longer than the genuine one i got with the camera!!, but Id highly recommend getting a second battery, only problem is the 5 hours to charge each one in the camera from flat, so then youll want a quick charger, it all adds up, but just think of the saving of films and processing :).
Someone mentioned the bad viewfinder quality, its electronic, and of a low resolution, so its quality is what Id expect, but the day the moon was illuminated red from mars, i wanted some pictures, and thats when i realized a non optical viewfinder was a minus, all CCD devices require a certain amount of light to work, and the moon wasnt bright enough, so i couldnt find it in the sky using either the electronic view finder, or the main screen, i had to guess where it was, take a picture, and see where it was on the resulting photo it displayed in preview mode, i got my pictures i wanted, just had to be inventive.
Shutter speeds, max of 1000th of a second is not that high, however get round that by adjusting the film iso setting down, the ability to make this camera act like a 35mm camera is a brilliant idea, with a 35mm camera, in low light for moving subjects youd either use flash, or use a high speed film, for bright days, youd use a low speed film, this camera has a setting to enable you to select which film speed to use, so use 400 or 800 in low light, and 125 or 200 in bright light,
The lower end of the shutter speeds is a disappointment for me tho, a minimum speed of 3 seconds, ok i guess for the snapper photographer with a light weight tripod, but i used to enjoy doing traffic trail photos, using a very heavy and sturdy tripod, and the bulb setting (holds the shutter open as long as you hold the button down), i can get small traffic trails, but nothing like the 4 minute ones i used to do, i wish there was a way to alter the cameras programming to enable a bulb setting.
The external flash hot shoe is excellent, not usually found on cheaper (as in sub £1,000 non professional digital cameras), however if only it had a dedicated hot shoe, having to set it up manually is time consuming, but i guess reminds you to take your time over a picture.
And the biggest problem i have found so far, the slow auto focus and aperture stop down speed, i have recently been at a show and saw the red arrows, i shot 120 pictures of them on my camera, and the first 5 i realized the slowness of the auto focus system, by the time it had focused, set the aperture up, and fired the shutter, the planes were out of shot, and all i got were the smoke trails, i turned the auto focus off, and set the lens to infinity, and managed to get almost every plane in, occasionally it would hunt around for the right aperture to use, but mostly i got them in, worth noting if you plan on taking photos of fast objects, one good side effect, the battery lasted a lot longer, so the auto focus motor takes most of the juice it seems.
And finally, one last grumble, the lack of an auto focus illuminator light, focusing on objects in near dark situations is impossible, the camera needs some light to lock onto, the flash is plenty powerful enough to get pictures of people infront of a sign at night i wanted, but i just couldnt focus on them in the dark, one of the people had to hold a torch on his face, and the camera locked onto that, he then turned the torch off, and i got a brilliant photo, just a shame a focusing system like canon slrs use couldnt be incorporated when this camera was on the drawing board.
Dont get me wrong, there are a million good things i can say about this camera, these bad things are everything i have noted in 1.5 years of ownership, and about 11,000 pictures i have taken,
i routinely take 250 pictures on a day out now with this camera since getting the extra battery.
