Thoughts from a Power User
Im the proud owner of a Humax PVR8000 Digital Receiver / Hard Drive Recorder (superb machine!) and I purchased the Philips so I could make permanent DVD back-ups, or transfer programmes onto disc to watch another time on other DVD players & PCs. I could have bought an all in one Hard Drive/DVD Recorder but with decent models at £700, this was a much cheaper way of achieving the same (and at the time I had no need for copying DVDs). Pros: Does what it says on the box very nicely. It will replace your video recorder and allow you to watch recorded shows on most DVD players or PCs. Video + is a great addition (my HDD recorder doesn’t have this and its a pain!) and theyre are a number of useful features such as recognising the TV channel you’re currently watching so you can hit record straight away without making sure you’re recording the right channel! Cons: Manual is very basic, remote control is cheap & nasty, menu system appalling. But like with anything, once you know what you’re doing its fine. If you’re replacing a Video recorder (10 discs = 60 hours … 10 tapes take up a lot of room!) or need the facility to back up programmes to be watched on a DVD player, then buy it. Only downside for me is that I already have a Hard Drive Recorder so it seems like an expensive luxury just to back up TV programmes!

Wonderful Kit
Just got one of these today. It was a toss-up between this and the Panasonic. Ok, with the Panny you can record whilst watching and do more editing but it was the compatibility which pushed me to Philips. With this, the rewriteable discs can be played on virtually any DVD ( they cannot with the Panasonic- only the write once discs can play on normal DVD machines). This means I can record, then watch my recording on my DVD in the bedroom. The machine looks lovely; quite wide but slim with a mirrored DVD tray. A big red circle lights up when burning which looks cool. The quality of recordings is indistinguishable from the source ( I have only used the 2 hour mode so far.) It is rare that a piece of technology amazes you, but I genuinely thought this was the dogs B******s when I first used it.I forget I am watching something recorded! Somebody told me the old Philips recorders were unreliable and kept breaking down, but it seems they have the problems sorted out with this new model. On the downside, the instruction book is crap. I think I have now worked out that if you select a menu picture to record over ( all recordings are shown in Thumbnail picture format in the menu, so you go onto one, press record and it records from that point, wiping off that one and all following recordings), the one you are recording over does not automatically wipe off- only when the disc fills up. Nowhere does it detail this in the instructions. Get one- you will not regret it.

DVDR70 SATISFIED CUSTOMER!
I bought the philips dvdr70 recorder a few weeks ago, although i was slightly concerned by some of the negative views on amazon.co.uk about the product, i thought for the price and name of the product, i would buy it, i wasnt dissapointed i have had no problems with it at all, very simple to operate, just plug-in and it will install all your channels for you automatically, the playback on the recordings i did are very good sharp quality, it also has video plus which means you can set it up to record a number of programmes in seconds, couldnt be more simple, when you go into the menu of your recordings you will see a picture and name of the programme you have recorded, using the cursor key on the remote to highlight the programme you want to watch and press play, its that simple, and its great for copying your old videos that you want to keep, the great thing about this is they will last a lifetime, very easy to copy no special leads just insert the video press play, and press record button on your dvd recorder and thats it, i would highly recommend the philips dvdr70 to anyone, because it is a very good simple to use product, well worth the money i spent on it and a good introduction to the digital age.
