Visioneer One Touch Scanner........
Having used an old Mustek scanner for some time I decided it was time to treat myself to something better and this model from Visioneer caught my eye. I was surprised how bulky the machine is considering the drive towards thinner hardware these days, but as it is a desktop scanner, not for portable use, I wasnt too worried. Installed perfectly well on Windows 98SE, (yes, some of us still use iron age operating systems), and runs well too. This scanner is in fact several machines in one, scanner, fax,(using your existing fax software), copier (using your existing printer), text reader. The lid can be removed to allow scanning thicker documents or books. It has a feature to extend the life of the scanner lamp, it turns it off when it hasnt been used for x minutes, (you have to set this feature and state how many minutes), however, when you want to scan again, you have to wait for the lamp to warm up, which can be annoying. Allegedly, there is a Transparancy adapter available as an optional extra, allowing you to scan transparancies and, I would think, negatives, but I cant find any mention of it on the Visioneer website, which is where they suggest you look. Maximum resolution is in the order of 1200x4800, excellent, and enough information can be extracted from a 6"x4" print to make an A4 size print with no loss of quality! Scanning speed at 150 to 200 Dpi is fast enough, my old Mustek used to take ages even at 100 Dpi, youll need plenty of RAM to stay on the tracks when scanning at higher resolutions . A good all round machine, USB connected, and good value for money, hard copy user manual supplied. I would recommend this for your shortlist.

Be Careful
This Scanner packs a hefty 1200x4800 resolution potential. Incredible for its price... But when being used at over 300dpi it is slow and uses a large amount of memory. Most laptops or three year old home computers would be easily flooded if this Scanner was used at its maximum settings.
The build quality is somewhat weak. The scanner head lock jammed after two days. If you plan to travel with the machine, be careful.

Lovely scanner, takes up very little room, you can even stand it on its side with the stand provided. Readiris Pro version 5.0 with Cardiris LE

Optical Character Recognition is a technology that sets out to do what the human brain can do almost instantly--convert visual data into textual data. In other words, to read and understand printed text. To a certain extent, todays generation of OCR software manages to recognise most text you can throw at it, but still needs to be babysat.

Readiris Pro will, fairly quickly, recognise large blocks of text with deft precision, provided the text is in a monospaced font with no page creases..
