Very Very easy
I hated French at school and learnt more or less nothing,Recently i decided that maybe it would be nice to live in france one day, so inspired i purchased the cd rom package. I,ve being doing it on and off for about 2 years and can say the coarse will suit a complete beginner right through to basic conversation skills with a french person. My only grumble is that the bbc have not replicated this coarse in Italian.

Not so good without the supporting book...
This could be an excellent product - however, it seems to be designed as a support package to the BBCs French Experience course books. We found it quite frustrating trying to learn even the basics from the CD alone, and so this is definitely not recommended unless either the BBCs book or another course text is bought as well.

Absolute bargain
What you get is a series of small scenarios, each covering a different theme: work, home, family, holidays etc. Each consisting of a series of still pictures of people talking, in effect a short video. The window size is very small, but sufficient. The layout is brilliant, French or English text is provided if you have difficulty understanding the spoken word. This is important as much of the dialogue is spoken at a natural pace ie. fairly rapidly and without making a great effort to pronounce every word carefully. Hence as a practical course in spoken French it is excellent. The course also has several activities or games associated with each scenario, which are clever, harder than they look, and very educational. A short dictionary is also provided with each scenario giving translations, as well as audio clips of how to pronounce key works. I use it together with the Hugo book and language tapes (French in three months)the combination is excellent and avoids tedious overlap. One minor quibble, the software runs from the CD drive resulting in my laptop continuously running hot and noisy, a method of running from a hard-disk would be nice...

Multimedia Spanish
|
The blurb on this softwares case claims that the CD-ROM is suitable for adults as well as kids, but the cartoon characters and the scenarios in which they live make it clear that its far better for the young. The package is fun, and will certainly keep children amused for a good while. Most of the basics of Spanish are adequately covered. The emphasis is on speaking and understanding. At times, however, the environment takes over the fundamental (if tedious) importance of syntax. Take, for ex..
