This is a waste of good money
Got this unit for Christmas. Remote control doesnt work properly. Unit only works in "manual" mode which means you have to get up off of the sofa to operate it. I called Sony support @ 1800-222-SONY for technical help and they couldnt even tell me how to operate it. The unit seems to be hung in "manual" mode. When you press the power on button the red light comes on. When you press "open" on the dvd drawer, the red power on light goes off. Sony doesnt have a qualified technical staff to support their expensive products. Also, the dual remote will not operate my 25 inch Sony TV monitor. My suggestion is to buy a different brand besides Sony.

Superb
The DAV-S500 is a superb piece of kit from Sony, proving once-again that Sonys affordable electronics dwarf other big makes. Great sound, great picture, great all-round DVD player.
But, like with all things both good and bad, theres a drawback. Even though theyre pretty trivial, the Remote is a little on the fiddly side, with semi-important buttons represented by little buttons, featured among unimportant buttons. (Mainly the Function button(i.e. DVD, Video 1, Video 2, Tuner), and Mute.) Also, placing it in a medium/big room would improve the sound, and it could resound more & surround the listener. Having it in a small (i.e. bedroom-sized) room, the sound is a little too direct & (for want of a better word) non-surrounding.
Despite these minor problems, though, this is a great system, and would slot discretely into any (not small) room with ease.

I have recently purchased this system and can honestly say that it is brilliant value for money. Action and sci-fi movies are brought to life with impressive sound effects, and even more subtle scores on movies such as the Legend of Vagger Bance are given new persepective with the davs clarity and ability to reveal even the most subtle of nuances. The ability to connect it upto several sources such as the playstation (which sounds excellent!) and sattelite will give hours of audio pleasure ensuring that youll never be wanting to switch the system off.Overall an excellant product with which to explore DVDs true potential!

Considering this item is low cost, your could be fooled into thinking you get what you pay for. WRONG! This DVD Player and 5.1 home cinema surround sound system is brilliant!! It looks brilliant and plays everything I put in it, including dvds my other player wouldnt play, cds and cd-rws and the kod.. 
This has got to be the prettiest, most discrete Home Cinema package on the market. The Egg-shaped Satellites are the size of a credit card, & can be hidden away or proudly exhibited, especially with the help of Kleggs Wall-Mounts or Floor-Stands. The Sub-Woofer is a power-house which provides all th.. 
This is an amazing system that boasts an unbelievable amount of power from such tiny speakers. I went for this version over the M6 501B which comes complete with its own amplifier. My DVD player has its own inbuilt decoders but unfortunately you do suffer slightly when using 2.1 over the 5.1 surroun.. 
This product was quite weird, it had crackly sound when used with Ps2 but on any DVD player it was perfect ! This is why i only give the product 2 Stars !.. 
This Theatre system is top quality and at a very reasonable price. If like me you are a film nut and like to live the sounds then this UMAX system will provide you with that quality.
