Very Good Mix
I dont know why this book has had so many bad reviews. I am of the group that give this 5 crowns. It has a superb mix, showing you how to interact with databases, how to write your own ActiveX controls to send email etc. My one problem was the reliability of the VBMail component supplied, but a quick re-write of this to take out the bugs made it an excellent tool.

This book is not windows 95 developer friendly.
Beware of this text if you are a Win 95 developer. Much of the technologies employed in the practice samples will only work on NT or NT server. After spending 6 weeks struggling through it, wondering whether it was my code at fault(as it happened the technolgies just dont work on a Win 95 machine and they dont make it that explicit as to what you do need) I finally got everything working by installing Visual Studio 6 Pro. If you install this you get RDS 1.5, Microsoft Transaction Server and all the other goodies previously reserved for NT users. The Java Script Primer at the end is pretty useless unless you want to feed a virtual alien, I was none the wiser as to how to update a database or run a simple click event procedure after studying it, so I decided not to support Netscape browsers and save myself the JScript hassle. I learned a lot from this book but it really shouldnt have been as hard work as it was.

Not What I Needed as My First ASP Book
Like many other reviewers, I bought Programming ASP because it was published by Microsoft Press. I have no objections to the IE-only nature of its focus because my projects are (currently, at least) on an all-MS Intranet. I was disappointed in the book, however, because it makes no attempt to teach me ASP.

It presents four ASP "projects" in the form of tutorials. If you need EXACTLY these applications, you may find it useful. If not, you will follow me in looking for another ASP book.

My greatest criticism is with the index: its terrible, or at least very sparse. I always counted on MS Press to present an index that cross-referenced every hair on my dog. Disappointing.

ActiveX ISAPI Scripting

I used chapters 9-11, they are very good and useful. I think there are few more interesting things. I do not know why authors put a lot of info about IDC, ASP and other junk in the book about ISAPI. Also, Im not happy with Delphi framework chapters ...

Java Fundamental Classes Reference (Java S.)

As others have pointed out, there isnt much here that isnt in the freely available JDK documentation. Also, most computer books lag behind the actual software they cover. There are a few indispensable "classic" computer books out there, but theyre all about stuff like UNIX, TCP/IP, and C, targets th..
