| Island of Dr. Moreau [WS/P&S] [1996] (REGION 1) (NTSC) |

Under-rated, thought- provoking film
As I first sat down do watch the Island of Dr M. I had relatively low expectations. I was therefore, presently surprised when I discovered it to be excellent in most respects. The film gradually becomes more and more menacing and by the end, I felt genuinely scared! Furthermore, it raises a number of interesting questions about humanity. Such as, are we inherently violent creatures? and most centrally, can our most base instincts be controlled. I would recommend this film to anyone who appreciates films that do more than simply tell a story. If you like cube, the pledge, American beauty or momento, then you will love this. Just watch it. Now. (Are you still here??!) ps: BUY IT NOW!

A new age version of: "Lord of the Flies"
This film contrary to the superficial interpretation of it, leads to how we (the human race) are no better than the animals we tame amongst us, in fact worse. This film has a very similar linking between "Lord of the Flies" (by William Golding) and "Animal Farm" (by George Orwell), since they both take a strong political side to them where the quest for leadership gets out of hand with primate minds. The film is very well structured and is ideal for those viewers who can use a little imagination to aid the concept of the film.

Only for Monster Makeup Students
This disaster only deserves a star for the sensational creature makeup. The plot just drags along with low-witted archetypical characters and dialogue. Marlon Brandos Dr. Moureau seems like a fat old lady but conveys little menace or credibility. Val Kilmers character is poorly concieved, written and dreadfully acted. It just makes no sense. The marrow of this complete waste of time, is a metafore about humanity as subtle as a chainsaw. If you dare to buy this in DVD format, do not worry. It has plenty other uses, such as a freesbie to play with your dog.

Paul Newman
|
Paul Newman is always going to be an interesting subject to write a biography about, but with this book the author shows an obvious dislike or maybe even jealousy of his subject. It is written in a manner that criticises Newman for very petty things. The author is obviously not a fan and this is enh..

D.W.Griffith: An American Life
|
Minutely researched, Richard Schickel really did his homework. Griffith emerges as an intriguing, if not altogether engaging, character. He seems to have been the first to understand what was to become the accepted language of popular cinema. For example, he showed that intercutting two sequences (a..

The 400 Blows - Criterion Collection
|
Somewhat mirroring his own past, Truffaut uses the camera to give a sociological account of Antoine Doinels childhood. Not a patronising account, however, but looking at the world, quite literally, from a childs perspective. Parenting and Authority are very much criticised, as Truffaut poin..

Dumb and Dumber [WS/P&S] [1995] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
|
Delivering exactly what its title promises, this celebration of stupidity was Jim Carreys 1994 follow-up to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. The film pairs the rubber-faced wacky man with Jeff Daniels as the not-so-dynamic duo of Lloyd and Harry, dunderheads who come into the possession of a briefcase containing ransom money that is intended for Mob-connected kidnappers. Lauren Holly co-stars as the woman who lost the briefcase, and with whom Carrey falls in love (both in r..
