Better than some costing double
I acquired an SD220e to replace my playstation 2 as a primary DVD player (soooo noisy - anyone who hasnt upgraded yet should do so at this price!). The picture quality of the Tosh is excellent - I recommend using a good SCART lead or S-Video should your TV be suitably equipped (Im using a Philex Thor SCART-SCART, available from Maplin, plugged into the RGB SCART input of my Samsung TV) to get the best of the equipment. Correctly set up, the clarity and crispness of image is superb with none of the occasional pixellating and related glitches I had experienced with the PS2. Hooked up to a good AV amplifier (Yamaha DSP-AX620 in my case) via the optical digital connections (Cambridge interconnect) the sound is also superb with good, tight bass and accurate, quick steering of effects across the soundstage. I also havent noticed that disconcerting pause as the player switches layers with this player. It wont make a bad film good but it does help make a good film great. WIth a good TV and audio set up this player easily out-performs some rival costing up to twice as much (trust me, I spent weeks auditioning players in the price range!) A great buy. Oh, and much cheaper here than I paid! The only thing I would say is that the remote is a bit cheap and also youll get really annoyed if you buy discs that arent Digital or DTS encoded, such is the aural fun to be had from this player.

Superb DVD Player
Having owned a Sony Multiregion player which I was extremely happy with on the DVD front, I was a little disappointed to find that it did not play VCDs, SVCDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, or MP3. This was only a recent requirement since I have been making my own Home movies in VCD and SVCD format. With the Sony having such a good DVD picture and sound I was a little reluctant to purchase a new player without checking every review of every player that I could come across. I did not want a player that did play all disks but played them badly. I decided after reading the reviews here to purchase the Toshiba SD220 Multiregion player. I must say Im delighted. Not only does it play everything Ive thrown at it (DVD-R, RCE, VCD, SVD, CD-R, CD-RW and MP3) but it plays them all impeccably. The picture is better than my Sony player and the sound is miles better. Music Playback (CD & MP3) is fantastic. Sounds are rich and full. Picture quality is sharp without being forced, the colours are vibrant with no signs of smudging. A nice touch is the ability to change the picture to suit your own needs (darker, lighter etc) and the sound system has four options to choose from; the best in my opinion is the dialogue enhancer which reduces all sound except dialogue to allow you to clearly hear what is being said (no more volume adjustments on the TV set when action scenes are being played out and its past midnight...). The only disappointment for some would be the lack of 5.1 sockets on the back. But for me that is not a major factor. I would heartily recommend this player to anybody. The price is misleading as you would not expect a player this good to be this cheap (I paid £200+ for the Sony and thought it was great but it doesnt compare to the Toshiba). Times are changing and there are some excellent players in this price range but all the reviews on the internet point to this one being by far the best...and I would definitely agree. Trust me folks, its a cracking player!

You wont get better for the price
Make sure you use a good quality scart lead to get the best from this DVD player. I have it connected to a Toshiba Widescreen TV With Dolby Digital Surround Sound. The picture and sound are amazing. I was worried it may not be able to read my MP3 collection since the tracks are hidden in Sub-directories on each CDr, no worries it lists each track on-screen with directory path and an easy to use navigation menu to select your tracks. Conclusion: This is a profesional piece of kit at such a bargin price.
