A triumph of engineering it is not
Having read the poor reviews we chanced this product to help our toddlers eczema. As mentioned previously, when this product works, its very good. It did help our sons condition. However after a couple of weeks the machine literally "blew up". If you live in a hard water area like London you need to clean the machine of limescale build up at least once a week, otherwise it will overheat. The second machine we received also worked well for a period of one week. However on refilling the water tank the handle completley snapped off under the weight sending 10 litres of water splashing all over our bathroom floor. I think this product maybe a discontinued line (for good reason) as you can pick one up on ebay brand new with no reserve.

worked well for first 3 weeks
This product worked great for the first 3 weeks, then as others have experienced, the display said "refill" when clearly it was full. We fortunately had the forsight to put it on an offcut piece of carpet on top of our new one as water and a horrible cream coloured gunk sprayed from the rear vent over furniture and the carpet within a 0.5m radius. The carpet was completely soaked, the cream-coloured deposit I expect was mineral salts, but once dry was difficult to remove from the furniture. However, we may try once more with this product as we were quite impressed with it at first.

Perhaps unreliable is unfair.
Other reviewers have complained about the reliability of this unit. I cant be sure this is justified for reasons Ill go on to explain.

Firstly, though, I should say that this is my first humidifier, so Ive given a neutral 3 stars since I have nothing to compare this to. Even without that caveat I would say its been a pretty average experience; I am not yet thanking God for my marvellous machine, yet neither am I kicking it around the house and shouting at it.

I was worried about the reliability of the product, having read the reviews before purchase. I have had problems with the unit telling me that the water tank is empty when clearly it is not. However, I think Ive identified when this happens, and perhaps it isnt a problem once you know:

1. The instructions tell you to place the water tank on the unit when the unit is switched off. If you do this and switch on immediately I think the water does not have time to feed through to the trough where the element is housed and it complains that it is empty. Switching on 30 seconds after putting the water tank on seems to get round this.

2. The instructions tell you that the unit needs maintenance AT LEAST once a week. The unit complains that it needs refilling when the element trough is becoming full of debris. Giving it a clean seems to sort it out. I live in London and this machine has seriously made me wonder what Londons water supply is like. After a week theres all this MATTER in there, clogging it up... its like crushed autumn leaves in colour and appearance and has the consistency of frost when crushed between the fingertips.

There are 3 main parts that require cleaning. 2 of these are removable and user friendly, no more a challenge to clean than a cheese grater. However, the trough with the element in, which houses the bulk of the dirt, is not removable and you cant place the whole unit under the tap. Youll need to improvise some kind of implement to deal with this, perhaps an old toothbrush. Even then it is difficult to gouge out the mess; this is a real pain in the backside - and needs doing once a week AT LEAST remember.

The unit has its own humidity reading, but I wouldnt place too much store by it. The sensor is attached to the power lead and theres no way to place it very far from the unit itself. It seems logical to conclude, therefore, that the sensor is pretty much bathed in the humidity generated by the unit. I have another hygrometer on the other side of the room which, rather predictably, gives a much lower humidity reading.

Having said all that, it heats up the water quickly and it comes out very hot. Im not sure this is a huge achievement, but thats what its designed to do. And do it it does.

If anyone knows of a humidifier thats easy to clean and works well Id like to know about it.

I should note that I have been using the product for just 3 weeks, whether reliability will become an issue later; well, fingers crossed.

Delonghi DEC10A portable dehumidifier

I was expecting good things from this model as its more expensive than the bottom-end models and looks quite high quality.
However I was very disappointed by several things:

- the appliance external drain feature does not work. The service engineer dismantled it and confirmed that there was no ..

Honeywell Ultrasonic Humidifier

The Honeywell Ultrasonic Humidifier is a really top-notch piece of kit!

As someone who requires a humidifier to be on during the night, I am incredibly impressed at how quiet this machine is. I have used other less-expensive humidifiers in the past that have bubbled and chugged all night long mak..

DeLonghi DEC12 Dehumidifier

From the moment I pulled it out of the box, I KNEW(!) this was a good, robust, well made and most importantly classy dehumidifier. "It would look just fantastic in my porte chocher" I thought to myself.

Setting it up was a delight. The instructions were so simple to use and crystal clear that I h..
