When Karen Carpenter died on February 4, 1983 at the age of 32, more than one generation mourned. Karen and her brother, Richard, had achieved monumental success as purveyors of soft-rock soulfulness, aided by their wholesome, wistful looks. After all, these were the hard-rocking, disco-throbbing 1970s, yet with classics like "Close to You", "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "Weve Only Just Begun", the pair blurred the lines of musical class. But no one knew--or at least talked about--Karens debilitating bouts of bulimia and ongoing battle against the ravaging effects of anorexia. Close to You: Remembering the Carpenters is more a gracious memento than a documentary and presents a rather biased view, heavily influenced by Richards opinion and commentary. Beginning with the duos early major success, winning a Battle of the Bands at the Hollywood Bowl, its a quick trip through the salad years including the first record deal with Herb Alperts A&M Records. Alpert calls his initial listen to the Carpenters demo tape "love at first hear". That appears to be true for everyone who came into contact with them, as band members, songwriters Burt Bacharach and Paul Williams, and singer Petula Clark readily testify. The hits and the TV specials are reviewed, too, but something feels missing from this glimpse, which barely scratches the surface. Its obvious to anyone watching the film that Karen, who really wanted to be known as a drummer who sang, not the other way around, was in immense pain and terribly conflicted. Yet by the final credits, we know little more about her than we did before. She remains an enigma and this peek at her life--and Richards--feels too protective of her memory to tell the whole truth. --Paula Nechak, Amazon.com |

I have to say that this is one of the best Rainbow videos i have ever seen. I grew up watching Rainbow and this brought back loads of memories... 
Well I was a bit sceptical of buying a new improved version of The Snowman as the original is such a classic. However I found a lot of the extras interesting, it gave me a good insight of how animation used to be created. I also found that because it was in widescreen I didnt have the annoying black.. 
Paul Newman and his Butch Cassidy director, George Roy Hill, made a very original comedy in this 1977 story of an over-the-hill player/coach (Newman) for a lousy hockey team who gets results when he teaches his players to get dirty. One of the most hilariously profane movies ever to come out of Hollywood, this is the kind of film that makes its own rules as it goes along. Newman is very good, and while Hill goes for the gusto in terms of capturing the violence of this world, his instinct .. 
This 1951 adaptation of A Christmas Carol, starring Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge, is hailed by many as the best adaptation of Charles Dickens timeless Christmas story. Certainly, it is a very good movie more than capable of bringing a tear to your eye as you witness Scrooges rebirth as a man who..
