| Sony DVP-NS300 Silver DVD Player |
| Description |
The DVP-NS300 is Sonys entry-level DVD player, but still boasts the comprehensive set-up controls of the more expensive models. It also carries Sonys TV Virtual Surround and a Block Noise Reduction system to improve picture quality. On professionally encoded modern DVDs the effect of this is negligible, but it does help with some of the early DVDs which were poorly encoded, helping to reduce artefacts. The first thing that strikes you about this player as you pull it from its box, is that it is extremely lightweight. It goes against the grain of belief within the world of hi-fi and home entertainment products, where typically more weight is associated with better quality. Despite initial concerns, the build quality was solid enough and the quality of playback superb for a model of this price. The rear connections just cover the basics, though they do include a co-axial digital audio out for hooking up to your home theatre set-up. Theres a single SCART socket, which is only a problem if you have other equipment also fitted with single sockets. The remote has a fair collection of buttons, but lacks a set of number keys. This means that for scene selection you need to use the up, down, left, right buttons instead, which is a pain. One much-welcomed addition however, is the button that turns the subtitles on and off. Previous models had this option buried in the set-up menus and you had to stop playback to switch. Sony DVDs have a reputation for excellent picture quality and the NS-300 doesnt disappoint here. Its noticeably better than rival budget models, with deep blacks and crisp images. Fast-forward and slow motion are wonderfully smooth too. The NS-300 lacks fancy frills, but the Sony electronics at its heart deliver the performance where it really matters, on the screen.--Miles Berkeley |

The H & B DVD-5415S is an ultra-slim "out of the box" Multi-region DVD Player. Measuring well under 60mm high, this is one of the sleekest DVD players you can get. Connecting up the DVD player can be done in a variety of ways, depending on your other equipment, but at its simplest, you just connect the supplied SCART lead between the back of your ..
