The Yamaha SW1000XG is no ordinary sound card--manufactured by one of the leading audio equipment companies this is a card designed and made especially for musicians. Lets get things clear: this isnt a card for die-hard gamers. With no game port, no standard 1/8" audio jacks, no fancy surround sound support and not even an audio CD pass through, this card has been created with an entirely different job in mind. Based around Yamahas MU100 synthesiser this sound module equips you with an arsenal of over 1,200 professional quality sounds including 46 drum kits, all crammed into 20 MB of onboard memory. The card is capable of producing six stereo channels, or 12 mono channels with mixing, all of which tie in with the cards DSP3 effects generator. This offers over 70 programmable effects all generated in real time by the card and applied to either digital audio or MIDI tracks.
Connection-wise the card uses high quality gold RCA jacks for stereo out, plus co-axial digital and has a 1/8" mini jack for microphone or line-in. A mini-DIN port provides MIDI in and out ports thanks to a supplied adapter.
The card comes with rather outdated drivers that work fine but better DirectX support and lower latency require updating from the Yamaha XG Web site. Installation is trouble free, though the supplied individual programs such as XG Editor and XGworks need to be installed manually. A reasonable paper manual is supplied with extensive additional help and information available on disc.
If youre serious about studio based-music the SW1000XG combines a 64-voice polyphonic synthesiser, independent effects, a quality Windows sound card, virtually noiseless connections and more into a unit of the highest quality, all tied to your PC. Consequently, the seemingly steep price is actually extremely good value. --Nick Baxter
