The 1998 edition of Following the Fairways is a comprehensive reference book on many of the finest golf courses in Great Britain and Ireland, plus a chapter on golf in France. The book is an easy-to-follow guide on "Where to Play- -Where to Stay" and has 30 chapters, each of which deals with a small geographical area. An attractive, hand-drawn map at the start of each chapter shows the location of each golf club and the information is then given under three headings. First there is "Choice Golf", which recommends not only the best golf in each area, but also highlights good quality hotels, inns and restaurants which are close to hand.
Next there is "Championship Golf", including not only information on all the famous courses in Great Britain and Ireland, but also information on some very fine new golfing complexes which have been created in the golfing "boom" of the 1990s. All of the Open Championship venues are included, together with many lesser-known courses, situated in the most beautiful parts of the respective countries. Finally, each chapter also has a directory of golf clubs which gives information on telephone numbers, addresses and yardage, together with approximate green fees and visitor policy.
All types of golf are represented--links, heathland, parkland and cliff-top--and the book is informative and entertaining. Following the Fairways is beautifully illustrated, with a wealth of golfing fine art ranging from classics to contemporary, some of which have never been seen in print before. "French Golf" is new to this edition, and gives details of selected courses throughout France, for those who wish to go further afield or perhaps include a round or two while on holiday.
This is an excellent book; easy to use as a reference to plan those golfing holidays we all dream of. Every clubhouse--and every golfer--should have one. -- Ben Naylor
