H & B has launched a new model for the budget DVD player market with the DVD-4420. Its a well-built machine in a matt silver finish and offers "out of the box" multi-region playback, Dolby Digital, DTS and MP3 audio support. In comparison to the super-slim DVD-5415S the DVD-4420 has no karaoke functionality or metal facia but has lots of other features including audio CD and Video CD playback. This player is very easy to set up. Simply plug it into your TV with the supplied RGB SCART cable, switch channels on your TV and switch on the DVD player. Our machine was set to French Language as default, but the on-screen menu system is very intuitive and the player is very easy to set up so changing this was no problem whatsoever. If you are plugging the player into a Dolby Digital or DTS amplifier, the on-screen menus allow you to set up the audio options and can even perform an audio test to check that all your speakers are performing as they should be.
On the front of the DVD-4420 there are the standard play/pause, stop, skip, search and eject buttons including a large LED display. Around the back youll find the regular video connectors (SCART, SVHS and RCA Composite) as well as optical, coaxial and Dolby Digital audio sockets. The supplied remote control features all of the buttons you would expect to find on a DVD remote control and some of the lesser used buttons are hidden under a facia that slides down. In theory this is very good, however, in practice its a bit fiddly and you get the feeling that the sliding facia could snap at any moment.
But what about DVD playback? Well, youll be pleased to hear that it performs very well. The colours are bright and the picture is as sharp as a blade. The quality isnt up there with the high-end players but for the budget price you wouldnt expect it to. The audio is very powerful and when connected to a suitable amplifier it will annoy the neighbours.
The DVD-4420 had no problems playing UK and US discs and region selection is automatic - so no menus to scroll through to set the DVD player up. The DVD-4420 will also play RCE encoded region one discs with no problems whatsoever. MP3 playback is good, just pop in a CDR with some MP3 files on them and the DVD-4420 will automatically play them.
The H&B DVD-4420 is a good entry-level DVD player that looks and performs like some of its more expensive brethren. It may be lacking in some features, but as a basic, no-frills multi-region DVD player its well worth taking a closer look at.And if black isnt your bag, it is also available in silver.--Martin Snelling
