Having already established themselves as the leaders of mass storage portable audio players, Creative Labs have gone one step further by adding a 20GB hard drive to their existing DAP Jukebox--giving the user the capacity to store over 500 CDs on the little blue machine. If youve got a very large CD collection and you dont want to carry it about, an MP3 player is an essential purchase. However, most MP3 players have limited storage capacity and you can really only store a couple of CDs worth of music at one time. Creative have addressed this problem by sticking a 20 GB hard drive into a unit no bigger than a portable CD player. The Jukebox 20 isnt just limited to MP3 files, it will also playback WMA files that are even smaller than MP3 as well as WAV files. Because the Jukebox 20 uses a reprogrammable firmware, it can adapt to new audio formats. The unit comes complete with everything you need to get started, including two sets of rechargeable batteries (that need to be charged for 12 hours before use), USB cable, headphones, carry case and both PC and Mac software packages. The software is very powerful and produces good quality files, but it does take some getting used to. However, if youre familiar with other MP3 ripping/encoding packages, youll have no trouble. A closer look at the hardware will reveal two line-out sockets for plugging the player into an external amplifier, a line-in socket for direct recording, a USB connector, a button lock switch, headphone socket and volume control. The Jukebox 20 is heavier than a portable CD player, given that it contains a 20 GB hard drive, but its not cumbersome. Some people may find the volume level isnt loud enough, but its enough so that it wont annoy fellow passengers on the train. One main criticism however, is the length of time it takes to boot the player up--it seems like an age. Once the player has started you have a whole host of features to play around with including different audio settings such as cave, city and arena as well as standard playback options and a play list creation mode. If you have large quantities of tracks stored on the player, the search facility will be invaluable and the backlit LCD screen is great if you want to use the machine in low light. Overall, the DAP Jukebox 20 may seem a bit on the expensive side, but when you consider the great audio quality and the ability to store over 500 CDs on it, its a good purchase.
