Fujis S1 Pro is a high-end digital SLR aimed at the professional photographer who wants to move to digital images. It is based around the body of a Nikons N60 SLR camera combined with Fujis 3.4-megapixel SuperCCD. On the back is a two-inch LCD screen augmenting the through-the-lens view. The SLR body will accept most Nikon F-mount lenses, making it a flexible package. Battery life is good and, unusually, it uses two sets of batteries, each powering different sub-systems. It also uses two control panels, one on top and the main LCD panel. This can mean a fair bit of switching between the two to adjust the cameras myriad settings. Connection to a PC is via a USB cable, by far the easiest and simplest method, while images are stored on industry standard CompactFlash cards. The range of adjustments are impressive, including full auto, programmed, shutter priority, aperture priority, manual and a range of special exposure modes. The maximum frame rate is 1.5 frames per second. This can make capturing fast-moving scenes difficult. The built-in flash is fine for fill-in or close work but would need boosting for the more professional work this camera is capable of. A hot shoe on top of the unit facilitates this. To push the image resolution it boasts built-in software interpolation, which produces a maximum picture size of 3,042x2,016. However, this means massive files with a questionable relative improvement in quality. Its generally better to stick to the native maximum size of 2,304x1,536 pixels. The picture quality is extremely high, producing some of the best results you will see with any current digital camera. The S1 Pro offers a lot of features for the money too--it is considerably cheaper than many rival digital SLRs and, providing your requirements arent too extreme, is hard to beat.--Miles Berkeley |
