The Cobra Microtalk 220 is a professional quality two-way radio with a range of up to 3 km in flat, open conditions and is a practical and cost effective alternative to mobile phones in many situations. The unit shares many features with the Cobra Microtalk 110 including an automatic battery saving mode, a key-lock function to avoid accidental operation and the charmingly named "Auto Squelch" which optionally suppresses weak signals to reduce noise. The key benefit of the Microtalk 220 is the fact that it has 39 sub channels for each of the 8 principal channels giving a massive choice of 312 different frequencies--essential in built-up areas where personal radio usage is more common. For a device that comfortably fits in the pocket, the range is impressive, although hills, valleys and buildings will drastically reduce this. On the down side, the key-lock function does not apply to the volume controls making it possible to miss a call if the volume has been lowered accidentally. Also the power button is poorly positioned, frequently resulting in the unit turning on unintentionally.
