At the beginning of the 80s, arcades across the world were introduced to a new kind of video-game hero, Dirk the Daring. Using the power of laser disc and the cartoon style of Don Bluth, Dragons Lair--a story of an unwitting hero in a fight to rescue a beautiful princess from an evil dragon--burst into life and wowed the gaming public. The concept is very simple--the player is presented with a third-person view of Dirk and a number of obvious options requiring a degree of joystick waggling to make the right choice obvious. The player must follow the correct path to blaze a trail through the games many levels to rescue the girl and become the hero of the day. For reasons known only to themselves, Digital Leisure have released this title for the PS2 and for DVD players (use the handset to control the action). It retains the high quality graphics of the arcade original and adds some additional DVD-type features. As an exercise in nostalgia, it should have retro-gamers grinning with joy.
