The Fuji FinePix 4800 is a mid-range digital camera that offers over 6x zoom plus video and sound recording in a neat, well-designed package. Fujifilm was in the vanguard of digital photography and has stayed at the front by developing new technologies and designing them into stylish, well-specified cameras. SuperCCD technology, which arranges the minute sensors in a CCD array into a tight honeycomb, rather than straight lines, is Fujifilms latest. The company claims it increases the effective resolution of this 2.4-megapixel camera up to 4.32 megapixel. The FinePix 4800 Zoom is the size of a fat, Walkman-style cassette player and the upright design comes from FA Porche, a relative of the car-designer. As well as a two-inch colour LCD monitor on its back, theres a circular monochrome status display that shows red for recording and green for playback. The display declares a friendly "hello" when you switch on and "see you" when you switch off. In between times it shows the regular kinds of status information and is controlled by a ring of four buttons round its edge and two others for confirming and cancelling choices. A knurled, rotary wheel at the top of the case selects mode. As well as taking digital pictures, you can record up to 90 seconds of video and sound clips to accompany your shots, storing them all on the 16 MB and 64 MB SmartMedia memory cards supplied. When you switch on, a 3x zoom lens powers out of the front of the camera and this, combined with a 3.75x digital zoom, means you can move in very close to your subjects, without crowding them. Picture quality is excellent, with high detail on landscapes and good colour fidelity under most lighting conditions. A pop-up flash takes care of internal shots. Connection to your PC is easy. A USB-linked cradle holds the camera when you return home, making photo transfer easy while recharging the Lithium ion battery pack at the same time. --Simon Williams |
