The Archos Jukebox 6000 answers the major criticism levelled at MP3 players, that of storage space. With a 6GB internal hard drive the Jukebox can store around 100hrs of CD-quality music (128kbps). It also has the advantage of doubling as a portable USB hard drive. When you first open the box it is essential that you charge the unit fully before proceeding with any other tasks. Failure to do so will cause problems, such as the drive locking up your PC. The Jukebox comes with a mains adaptor, carry case, earphones, driver disc and USB lead. Once charged, installation is straightforward, simply a matter of following the brief instruction manual. The Jukebox appears within your PC as an additional drive, dynamically assigned a letter, which you can then drag and drop files onto. Software is provided for creation and manipulation of MP3 files in the form of MusicMatch. The player itself is compact, rugged, but still on the heavy side. The audio quality is poor through the supplied earphones and we would suggest replacing these at your earliest opportunity. The menu navigation on the backlit LCD display can be cumbersome, though the use of playlists does help, as does judicious searching on the Internet, which reveals some handy menu shortcuts that the manual fails to mention. Hopefully the firmware upgradeability of the device will be put to good effect to iron out some of these niggles. The Archos Jukebox 6000 is not a perfect solution, but its combination of features at a great price make it well worth considering. --J Weston |
