The Sony MVC-CD300 digital camera is Sonys first digital still camera to bring together the affordable storage of CD-R/CD-RW, the superb Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar lens with 3x optical zoom and a 1 1/8" 3.3 megapixel CCD. The MVC-CD300 has a distinct appearance, its shape largely determined by the presence of the internal 8cm CD-R/CR-RW drive. Despite this, the unit is still no larger than a typical SLR camera and is well balanced. The MVC-CD300 shares many features with the Sony DSC-S75 including a variety of modes such as simultaneous recording of both TIFF and JPEG images, a voice mode which records an audio file of between five and 40 seconds together with the still image and also the ability to record both short MPEG movies with sound and animated GIFs. The MVC-CD300 also has a three-frame burst mode and usefully a three-frame exposure bracketing function with the ability to set the variance at either 0.3EV, 0.7EV or a full stop. Clearly the key benefit of this camera is its use of CD-R/RW media which will suit many, for reasons of convenience and cost. For example, a single 156 MB disc can hold anything from 1300 images at 640 x 480 with maximum compression, down to 81 images at 2048 x 1536 with minimal compression. However, it should be noted that the memory access time is slower than comparable flash memory based machines. Also, many will miss the traditional optical viewfinder--with the MVC-CD300 you are entirely dependent on the bright 2.5" TFT LCD. For playback of images and films there are several available options. You can load the supplied Adaptec DirectCD drivers which enable a PC with a USB port to view the Mavica as a normal CD-RW drive. Alternatively you can view the disc in a standard CD-RW or CD-R drive, the latter requiring finalisation of the CD. Editing software comes in the form of MGI PhotoSuite V8.1 for Windows (95, 98, ME, 2000, NT4) and MGI PhotoSuite SE V1.1 for Macintosh (OS7.6.1-9.0). MGI VideoWave III SE is also provided but for Windows only (95 OSR2.5, 98, ME, 2000, NT4). The camera is supplied with an AC adaptor, rechargeable battery pack, A/V connecting cable, shoulder strap, 8cm CD-R, 8cm CD-RW, a rather short USB cable and software on CD ROM. --Nick Baxter |
