The Sony SLV-SE210G--a solid and reliable video cassette recorder--is Sonys entry-level model. It still manages to exude something of the Sony charm and style though. At this price you are not going to get a massive list of features, however the SE210 does include a few nice touches. On the back there is a single SCART and aerial sockets, but nothing else, not even a phono audio output. The two head system delivers a remarkably stable picture, although dont expect wonders, particularly with less-than-perfect rental tapes. Large televisions and detailed examination will reveal some softness and colour smudging, which is to be expected at this end of the range and nothing too dramatic. Sound is mono, although to be fair it was never designed to be partnered with advanced home entertainment systems. However even some fairly simple televisions have stereo speakers these days and its a pity to miss out. What you do get is VideoPlus programming, perfect for parents. It also has PDC, Program Delivery Control, which uses signals embedded in Teletext to fire up your video recorder. This doesnt appear to have caught on with people, which is a pity because its a clever system which enables you to start recording at exactly the right moment and you wont record the wrong program if that footy match goes to extra time. Theres an onscreen display for the menus and the auto channel search makes it a breeze to set up. Theres also a frame at a time function, forward and backwards, always handy for trying to spot when the burly stunt double is substituted in the action sequences. It can also handle NTSC tapes and LP recording. The motor is nice and lively and can whizz to the end of a E180 in exactly a minute. You dont get the worlds most sophisticated video in the SE210 but what you do get is Sonys thorough approach to build and results--its a solid and reliable video recorder which does just what is says on the box.--Miles Berkeley |
