A 24 speed CD writer from Memorex, the TwentyFourMAXX offers the performance youd want and the software to get you going. With faster drives on the market a 24-speed writer is at the lower end of the CD writer market. The TwentyfourMAXX from Memorex is the entry level drive in the MAXX range of CD burners, with faster 32 and 40 speed MAXX drives now available. This particular drive offers all the basic features you’d expect; a fast 24 speed write, a speedy 10x rewrite and a maximum 40 speed-read. It also makes use of Memorex’s Just Burn write technology allowing the drive to vary the burn speed depending on system and media limitations. Rounding off the drive is a 2Mb buffer, a full UDMA 33 interface and it can be installed vertically. Packaged with the drive is Easy CD Creator 5 that comes along with Direct CD. The only media you get is a single high speed Memorex CD-RW disc, a mounting kit and an audio cable is also supplied but no IDE cable. In use we managed to write a complete 640Mb disc in three minutes 58 seconds, while the same amount of data took seven minutes 59 seconds with a CD-RW disc. When it comes to reading discs the peak speed we got was 5.9Mb/sec, while its average speed was equivalent to a 27x drive. CPU use was excellent being a low 30 per cent, access times were also good with random times down to 80ms. The Memorex drive has a low price, though its uninspiring write times and lack of any CD-R media means you might want to consider the cheaper LiteOn 32x drive that also features faster rewrite times.--Nick Baxter |
