The Kiiro 838d Midi is a well-built multi-region DVD player with built-in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS audio decoders plus a wide range of features including ECC image enhancement and MP3 playback--proving that high spec doesnt necessarily mean high price. Unlike most players, the 838d is not just multi-region, but it utilises auto region sensing technology that takes away the need to manually change the region setting of the player whenever you play a DVD from a different country. The 838d will also play region one titles such as Hollow Man that have been encoded with Region Code Enhancement (RCE)--designed to stop the playback of DVDs on multi-region players. The picture quality is both clean and crisp, without any unsightly picture break-up that can be present on some budget players. Also, if a DVD disc has beenbadly encoded, it is possible to enhance the picture quality by using the ECC mode--although the difference may be minimal. One small criticism is the slightly-longer-than-normal pause when the 838d performs a layer change in the middle ofa film. A closer inspection of the audio reveals both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS audio decoders that sound absolutelystunning when played through a compatible amplifier. As well as DVDs and standard audio CDs, the 838d will also play MP3 files and karaoke discs. The 838d also features an on-screen graphic equaliser for enhancing audio CDs, and two microphone sockets with separate volume and echo controls. The remote control, although a bit on the wide side, fits well in the hand and the buttons are clearly marked. The on-screen menu system is both clear and easy to use, giving you totalcontrol over the picture and sound settings. Above all else, the 838d makes a nice "ping" sound when you press the open/close tray button--which does get irritating in time. However, put all of this together and you have an excellent midi-sized player with more features than you can shake a proverbial stick at. If youre looking for a quality, well-built DVD player and you dont want to break the bank, the Kiiro 838d is certainly worth investing in. --Martin Snelling |
