Bright, sturdy but most of all charming, the Baby LEGO Musical Apple is one of those rare toys that really will last from birth to two years old. Press the cute, smiling yellow "worm" into the apple, and it will sing a soft lullaby as it gently reappears, rising slowly to its full height. Though this may at first seem simple and somewhat limited in function, it is anything but, and is something babies will love. Newborns only hours old will enjoy the tune if it is activated close to them in the cot, while from three to six months, the primary colours will stimulate young eyes and the rattle brick (also included and which fits on the top of the "worm") will encourage them to reach, touch, grab and rattle. Once a baby can sit up and until they are around 12 months, he or she will enjoy rocking the round-bottomed apple, playing with the rattle and crawling towards the toy as mobility becomes easier. From about a year old, a toddler will have enough strength to begin pressing the head down and start the lullaby going themselves, and until a child is two this will make a lovely bedtime companion and a fun, diverting toy. Worthy of the quality and educational value the LEGO name suggests, the Musical Apple is a departure from the usual array of building blocks and technical kits for which the toy manufacturer is best known. It is, however, a welcome departure, and the Baby LEGO range it belongs to is hopefully one that will expanded soon.
