Well-structured help in the form of teach-yourself tutorials can speed your progress when learning a new application and this package is an excellent starting point. There are tutorials at both beginner and advanced levels; select your level, choose a lesson and, if you wish, a topic within that lesson. Explanations then unfold in text boxes on screen. Topics can have one or several screens, presented as screenshots from the application with annotations and coloured outlines to focus your attention. Lessons in the beginners section include using styles, hyphenation and ways of using Words AutoText abilities. In the expert section, guidance is given on using formulae in tables, creating indexes and using bookmarks. The quizzes are comprehensive and time consuming (the time quoted to complete the 227 questions in the beginners assessment is 340 minutes so you need a high level of commitment). On the down side, scores are not saved and there is apparently no way of marking how far you have progressed through the quiz, nor are you shown the right answer when you get a question wrong. Nevertheless, the instructions are clear, a lot of ground is covered and you can watch a demo of the task in hand or practice it with help. --Mark Whitehorn |
