The Epson Perfection 1250 is a cool-looking scanner with capabilities that belie its budget status. The amazingly slim and fetching 1250 offers superb optical resolution for a budget scanner--1,200 x 2,400 dpi. This is achieved using a CCD scanning head rather than an inferior CMOS head. The scanning resolution is good enough for all but the most demanding of applications. Most of the time youll be scanning at much lower values. At 300 dpi, a 6 x 4-inch photograph is turned into a massive 1,800 x 1,200-pixel image. You can push the resolution even higher (using interpolation) to a heady 9,600 x 9,600 dpi. The resulting scans show good colour accuracy and focus and manage to capture subtle details in shadows. Installation is easy--one of the joys of USB devices. The driver includes a fully automatic mode, which sorts out settings and minor image adjustments for you. There are four QuickStart buttons, and you can configure the Start button to launch any specified application. You can, for example, send a scan directly to your printer. The removable lid is a boon when trying to scan awkward objects. The documentation is excellent and takes you through the set-up procedure clearly. All this makes the 1250 remarkably easy to use. While the software bundle includes all you need to get going, you might find that you need a more capable image editor to make the most of your scanned images. The scanning can be a little slow at the higher resolutions, and while it certainly looks good, the 1250 wont take rough handling. This aside, for a budget scanner, the Epson 1250 offers impressive results and a simplicity thats hard to beat. --Miles Berkeley |

Readiris Pro version 5.0 with Cardiris LE

Optical Character Recognition is a technology that sets out to do what the human brain can do almost instantly--convert visual data into textual data. In other words, to read and understand printed text. To a certain extent, todays generation of OCR software manages to recognise most text you can throw at it, but still needs to be babysat.Readiris Pro will, fairly quickly, recognise large blocks of text with deft precision, provided the text is in a monospaced font with no page creases..
