The Canon PowerShot A10 is a low-cost digital camera that boasts features and an image quality youd expect from much more expensive equipment. At the heart of the A10 is a 1.3 megapixel CCD thats capable of capturing pictures at up to 1,280x960 pixels, as well as 1,024x768 and 640x480. At these sizes youll find the quality and size of pictures is more than high enough to satisfy most home use and is capable of producing photo quality prints at 7x5". The image quality is also excellent for a camera in this price range. Pictures are sharp and colours are accurate and vivid. Helping you get even more from the camera are a number of optical enhancements including a macro mode for close ups, automatic flash including red-eye reduction and a true 2x optical zoom, plus an additional 3x digital zoom giving a combined maximum zoom of 6x. In use the zoom was responsive and quiet, while the auto focus was also quick to respond to changes.
A colour LCD is provided at the back of the camera allowing you to preview shots, adjust exposure and more. The menu system is easy to learn and quick to use, and the quality of display is very good. The camera comes with an 8 MB CompactFlash memory card, letting you store 10 shots at the highest quality mode though this can be increased to 32 by reducing the compression setting. As for power 4 AA sized batteries are required. A set of batteries are supplied to help you get going, though wed have preferred the inclusion of rechargeable ones.
A good software pack is supplied giving you picture-cataloguing software and a TWAIN driver to allow other imaging programs to access the camera. It also includes a photo-stitching package, which allows you to build panoramic images from multiple shots, and a remote-control package letting you use the camera through your computer. Both Mac and PC software is supplied.
With a solid build and an easy-to-hold case design the PowerShot A10 makes a perfect budget point-and-shoot digital camera that produces sharp high-resolution images with excellent colour. Backed up with a good feature set including the 6x zoom and software pack this package makes the perfect budget digital camera, though some may want to consider the slightly more expensive PowerShot A20, which has a higher resolution and better zoom lens.--Nick Baxter
